History of The United States Flag:
On June 14,1777 the US continental congress passed an act which established the official flag of the nation.
The origins of the first US flag is unknown, although some believe it was designed by Francis Hopkinson (New Jersey congressman) and sewn by Betsy Ross (Philadelphia seamstress).
Between 1777 and 1960 Congress passed many acts which led to the change in shape, design and arrangement of the flag. The acts also allowed stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state.
Today the flag contains 13 horizontal stripes. There are seven red stripes, which alternate with six white. The stripes represent the original 13 Colonies. The stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The red on the flag symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
Before 9/11 the flag represented the marking of american territory, and freedom. After the attacks the flag began to have a more strong meaning; it represented patriotism, "proud to be an american", our military and protection, everything an american is proud of about their country. The flag represents so much for the nation, which is why Americans so proudly wave the american flag.

The American Flag is a symbol of unity, togetherness and pride. I think that there is definitely a widely accepted respect for the banner of this country. The destruction or disrespect of the flag is considered a public outrage though it is not technically protected by law seeing as it would violate the first amendment.
Names like “Old Glory” have purpose because the flag has been around for awhile now and has much respect as it is something that means alot to the people of america and represents positive feelings. Other names like the “Stars and Stripes” or “Stars and Bars” have a more literate meaning but still produce positive feelings
