Research Project:Urbanization

Crime in the Public Press...The Gilded Age:

I chose to do my research on the topic of crime during the Gilded Age, and others interest in crime.  I am interested in the topic because I would like to know what type of crime was going on then and how urbanization caused are security to evolve, such as professional police forces. In addition I want to look at how what was going on during this time period prompted such people to commit these crimes. For example urbanization may have caused crime because there was so much change, and so much to adapt to. The first "serial killers of America" came about during this period, which interests me because it proves how much urbanization affected others. During the Gilded age others were so interested in true crime...they almost saw crimes as entertainment. Others were so interested in reading about crime because media, such as newspapers told these stories and spread them. During the gilded age newspapers would continue to play an instrumental role in affecting the course of the publics opinions on major issues such as crimes. The power of the press plays a key role in the way others looked at crime.
