Thinking About the Future

  1. predictions about the future were people making 100 years ago? 50 years ago?  
    1. 50 year predictions made in 1945 (link) 
      1. worlds food supply will increase 50 times over
      2. fishing will not be only crop obtained from sea
      3. no issue of overpopulation

      1. digital color photography
      2. rising height of Americans (taller by 1 to 2 inches)
      3. wireless telephones will span the world
      4. able to buy ready-cooked meals
      5. television 
      6. tanks
      7. bigger fruit
      8. no more c, x, or q in everyday alphabet
      9. everyone will walk 10 miles a day
      10. no more cars in large cities
      11. no mosquitos or flies

      1. no wild animals
      2. hot and cold air spigots
      3. University education will be free to every man and woman
  2. Most predictions made 100 and 50 years ago seem to be a "wish list" or things they hope for in the future. For example, no more mosquitos and flies, heating and cooling, ready-cooked meals...etc. Many predictions seem to be random or a bit strange, such as; no more c, x, or q, and everyone will walk 10 miles a day. While advancements in technology have greatly affected our world, and many believe in a bad way, the predictions do not seem to suggest a warning.  
  3. Many predictions made did come true. For example, mobile phones, bigger fruit, digital photography, television, tanks, rising height of Americans, heating and cooling...etc. The predictions that seemed bizarre, or have not quite happened include; no more c, x, or q in the everyday alphabet, everyone will walk 10 miles a day, no more cars in large cities, no mosquitos or flies, no wild animals...etc.
  4. Based on the predictions made it seemed as though people had a very positive outlook for the future. For instance, there were many predictions on advancements in technology, and things that would make our daily lives much easier (ready cooked meals, mobile phones, television). However, predictions also suggest our population will be healthier (walking 10 miles a day). These things suggest people were anticipating a better world, rather than the effects of these advancements. 
  5. My predictions for our future:
    1. We will come in contact with Aliens
    2. We will discover a new renewable and clean energy source to power our world, and will no longer use nonrenewable energy sources 
    3. Employment rate will greatly decrease due to technological advancements that will begin to do work for us

Letters of Westward Expansion

Letters of Westward Expansion In the time period following the revolution and the founding of Americas new government people began to move all over the country, especially towards the western states, this time is known as the westward expansion. Some moved to the West for religious regions, such as missionaries moving around the country to spread christianity. Today we use letters as a reference to gain knowledge on the lives of the people during that time. An article, "Letter Writing in America" by the Smithsonian National Postal Museum mentions that  "   Letters connected all of these migrants with the homes they had left behind, and helped to build an interconnecting network of people across the vast new country that was developing.  " Letters included information on things such as; n ews from home, news from the frontier, and news from the city. A new type of transportation, the railroad,  helped the postal service succeed.

Knights of Labor- Newspaper Research (Chapter 17)

Knights of Labor  I read the newspaper article " The Sedalia Weekly Bazoo ". The article was dated  March 09, 1886, and was based out of Sedalia Missouri. It referenced the Knights of Labor numerous times throughout the article, and touched on many different issues and events involving the organization. First it mentioned the strike that took place in Ft. Worth Texas by all the members of the Knights of Labor on the Missouri Pacific, Texas and Pacific and International and Great Northern. This strike nearly blockaded Texas and Pacific Yards, and twenty one locomotives and 400 freight cars were side tracked...the Knights claimed that the trains will not get past Wetherford West or Dallas East, and the Missouri Pacific was completely blocked. The community agreed with the organization, because they where all fighting for the same cause, an increase in wages.
